Buying this printer is gambling!

Based on mixed reviews (and low price) I bought this printer for my church hoping it would be the same as the 5 star reviewers printers. Good thing for a return policy. I printed about 6 CDs on it - only one looked good. The rest dropped a letter here or there, or it would have been a dash, or text would have been all over the place. I have included a picture of the CD which convinced me that it is not just the cartridge but also a picture of the device. Good size printer, very compact but I…

  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

Great product, great price

I've made about 200 CDs with the Signature Z1. The results are exactly as promised. Yes you can see pixels at 200dpi but you have to look carefully. Compared to commercial CD duplication, I've already got my money back. No problem with ink sticking to thermal CD blanks. Good blanks have a reject rate of less than 5%, and that's picky. It even prints cheaper forms with minor erasure problems. The Signature Z1 is nominally a mono color printer, but I've made CDs with the logo field red and the…

Very good performance but no color

Pros: The Primera Z1 delivers excellent and reliable printing directly onto the surface of a standard CD or DVD. This works much better with text printing than with any graphic printing. The thermal nature of the printer prevents "rubbing" or smearing even immediately after printing. It works best with unmarked CDs (although it will overprint any other markings or engravings on the CD). The cartridge lasts a long time (I printed over 200 CDs with my first cartridge). The software is easy to use

Don't worry, the printer is fragile and prone to failure

I replaced a Casio CD-100 CD printer with this one because I needed more than the two print areas that Casio offers - big mistake! At first the printer worked great and I was happy. I should have known something was wrong the first time I took the printed CD out of the printer and the spindle came out with the CD?! Reconnected and everything seems fine. When I got to the end of the tape it continued to make some unusual noises instead of telling me to replace the cartridge but continued to…

Inexpensive alternative to CD labels

Not only is trying to stick a paper label on a CD is a chore, but if you fail the label can jam your CD mechanism . There are currently two types of CD/DVD printers: thermal and inkjet. Thermal printing has at least three advantages over inkjet printing. First, thermal printers are cheaper than inkjet printers. In addition, you don't have to use expensive "printable" CDs, thermal printers work great with the cheapest blank CDs. Finally, thermal printing is more durable and does not rub off as…

Who cares what a good printer is

I bought this printer and was initially happy that I no longer had to put paper labels on CDs. The problem is that about 1/3 of my CD prints fine, but the rest prints fuzzy or very fuzzy with spurious blocks around the 4 different zones it prints in. After mailing the CDs I was completely confused and decided to spend $89. on the Epson Stylus R200. My god, what a great printer! Full color graphics, high resolution with no smearing, good ink quality. I would probably spend 3x more for Epson and…

Does a great job for the price

I've printed about a dozen discs with the Z1 so I feel entitled to give a small review. First let me say that for the price this little disk printer does a great job. Anyone complaining about text being erased must be doing something wrong as you really have to rub your finger over it to make it smear. And even right after printing. A few notes about packaging: 1. Print quality is excellent unless you are printing very small type or complex graphics. Turning the thrust washer in all 4 areas…

The Primera Z1 meets my requirements

All in all, I really liked the Primera Z1. It's quick and easy to use. I was happy with the results. Unlike the other reviewer, I didn't find the slight jaggedness in the text to be a problem and didn't notice it until I read his review - I had to look closely to notice it. I haven't tried printing charts, so I can't comment on that. I found the Primera Z1 to be extremely easy to set up: just plug it into a USB port, install the software (which was a breeze) and follow the instructions to…

Does what it's supposed to do and does it well, within limits

I've had a Z1 for a few years and have tried many discs with it. Here are my experiences and tips on how to get the most out of your Z1. Overall I like this printer. It's been working pretty well for me since the day I got it. To date I have run 500 discs. The Z1 uses a monochrome thermal ink cartridge to write on the disc. Unlike inkjet technology, thermal printing does not dissolve in water, washes or washes off. Even strong nail scratches are not enough to damage the print. For me, this is a
