Well made but terrible design

I picked this up to replace a Swanson version that was beat up. I'm a framing and exterior trim/siding carpenterThe good: it's well made and the ledge support is great. The bad. Both the handle and the blade measure 1-9/16" which is strange. The Swanson are 1-1/2" which works great for laying out plates / marking intersections and marking both sides of a stud/ rafter without having to move the square twice. Also being 1-9/16 wide the numbers on either side are 1-9/16" off. With the Swanson if the outside is at 5" the inside corresponding line is 3-1/2 inches. With this one if the outside is 5" the inside is 3-7/16" which is a pain when trying to layout. It's just not practical and I find it hard to believe no one thought of this when designing it. For the past 75 years the handle and blade have always been 1-1/2" wide and these guys decide to make it 1-9/16" which doesn't work with any standard and common lumber. Also the laser etched markings are hard to read, espically in the sun. It's a shame because it's well built but I can't get past the weird thickness and offset. If you plan to use it for layout just go with the Swanson as I'm going to do

Pros
  • The professional-grade stainless steel blade ensures durability and longevity
Cons
  • The stainless steel blade may emit a metallic odor
