Review on QNAP TS 230 Cortex A53 Quad Core Processor by Smooth May

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Incredible performance and USB host mode has limited speed.

I bought this because QNAP is the only low-cost NAS company to advertise USB host connectivity so it can be used as a direct-attached storage device. in practice I couldn't get it to work. In general, the interface hung due to low power consumption. It wasn't a very good experience for me. I returned it and bought a Synology DS220j thinking it would be better. While the user interface was excellent, the DS220j's performance is also too slow to be of any value. For example, when doing a USB copy from internal to external, the copy speed was much slower than the transfer speed I was expecting. I finally settled on the Asustor AS4002T, which supports 10Gbe, which no other has. Asustor's user interface is better than QNAP's and comparable to Synology's. It was a bit more money, but I'm very happy with the performance. Perhaps I can save some new NAS buyers some heartache and headache and recommend the AS4002T or if you need a little more expandability the AS4004T. (With this NAS and a $30 2.5Gb/s USB network adapter, you can use the bandwidth of a regular hard drive to transfer data over the network, which I think is great. At 2.5Gb/s s I get 70-80 metabytes per second, with QNAP I was limited to around 10.)

Pros
  • Lots of good vibes
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
