The player misses! suitable for TV and video

I have an old Toshiba model and I liked it so much I thought it would be a good buy. To a large extent, this is one of the most expensive models. I like the user interface and the remote control is good, although I wish the playtime worked on the unit's LCD, but it only plays the track number, which I don't care. What I dislike most about it is that it jumps, sometimes for LONG times, even on brand new DVDs! I don't know if this only happens when the DVD signal is upconverted, but so far it has

Bad DVD player! for dvd player and recorder

Have this to update Philips DVP642 for new HDTV. I really want to stay with Philips. However, their DVP5960 doesn't have an optical audio output (there's only coaxial) - I can't understand why that option was removed. So I went to BestBuy and bought a Toshiba. It has everything I wanted, HDMI and optical outputs, support for Divx, DVD+/-R. I think the photos turned out pretty well. Too bad it crashed so many times even when played with original DVDs. It would either skip a track or often stay…

Stuck when playing audio CDs

Everything else seems to work fine. Initially I had the same stupid problems with HDMI cables as everyone else, but thanks to reviews and research I quickly solved this problem. intermittently freezes when playing audio CDs; it doesn't matter if they are retail or recorded on cdr or on dvd-rw, it freezes for no reason. I've found that if I quickly press the setup menu button twice, playback resumes. It's like he's just pausing for no reason. Usually about 2 minutes after the first song and who…

No problems found by others

I've only had this DVD player for a few days, but I haven't encountered any of the problems others have mentioned. For example, I didn't have to hook up my DVD player via S-Video or component to set it up for HDMI. I just plugged in an HDMI cable and it worked with my TV. Also, someone else mentioned that the charging cradle was very noisy. Funny - mine is very quiet. Time will tell if mine will start blocking like the others. Because of this issue, I purchased a $12 2-year extended warranty…

Good working picture but freeze problem

I got this Toshiba unit on 12/18. bought and on 20.12. connected. From the first movie loaded into the device, I started experiencing intermittent screen freezes during playback. I tried about ten different retail DVDs and every one of them froze at least once. Toshiba Technical Support accepted my information and asked me to "reset" the device by unplugging it from the power outlet for a few minutes and then plugging it back in. After that, playback still freezes intermittently. Toshiba tech…

Waste of money on DVD players

You have to use component cables to connect your TV to switch it to HDMI. you didn't think about it before releasing this product? This thing is beyond imagination. Throughout the movie. sounds like the DVD is flying out of the player and hitting the wall. So if you buy one, make sure you have a spot where it can be covered and placed out of earshot (outside the room). with the door closed - a long HDMI cable may be required). I think the picture is ok. But in 1 out of 3 movies I watch, the…

Cons
  • Definitely bad product

I don't know why or why it has such a low rating maybe because there are mostly idiots here who know NOTHING about HDTV. Look, I'm a techie! I know what I am doing! Although I'm not sure about the rest of the world. This player is a PERFECT 10! Toshiba definitely knows HD, they do it RIGHT! Although this DVD player is not quite HD, it outputs a 1080i signal. It can be converted and sharpened to get so close to HD that your regular DVDs will look better than ever! I can only imagine what their…

Great picture and problem solving

I play Divx (and Xvid) and DVD files and have had several Toshiba DVD players for a low price because of their great picture quality, and this one is no exception. They went from 12-bit video processing on the 4980 to 14-bit video processing on the 4990, and the picture quality really got better. I won't go into detail about all the Divx playback features covered in other reviews. , but suffice it to say that it plays a wider range of files than the Philips 642 (which I also have) with better…

A good player with some firmware issues.

I've had this player for about 90 days now and I've also encountered the freezing issue. I called Toshiba for help and they suggested rebooting the device by unplugging it for five minutes or more. Tries. Upon watching five more DVDs to test the machine, the freezes stopped. Can't say it won't come back, but this fix seemed to make a difference as the freeze became more frequent and happened on EVERY DVD until I applied the reset. Now it seems to be working great. For now. Qualitatively, it…
