Quiet and still works well

We have a small clock with an oiled bronze finish and a Takane push-open/click mechanism which has given up after 20 years of service. The Takane quartz movement was ticking and I was looking for a silent replacement. The Takane replacement is made in the USA and retails for $20. It was a fraction of the price and it's quiet. The takane was held on with screws, and since this mechanism didn't have any to match, I used a few small strips of double sided tape to attach the mechanism. Since our watch is so small (3 inch face), I knew I wanted to reuse our hands. Before buying, I measured the hour and minute bars with calipers. I found that the hour hand would fit and the minute hand would have some play. I used several layers of aluminum foil to guide the minute hand shaft and then cut off the excess foil and punched a retainer in the center of the foil to get the small, used manhole cover in place. It's been quiet for a day now. I've read some negative reviews and hope this mechanism will stand the test of time at least as well as Takane, as taking it apart and putting it back together was a challenge.

Cons
  • Big and bulky
