Works With My Pet: Door & Stair Gate

We adopted an elderly dog with some behavioral issues and wanted to make sure he wasn't wandering around the house when we were away. I didn't want anything permanent so we went with a pressurized swing gate and Kidco mostly lived up to expectations. Overall quality is generally good. The product is made from white powder coated steel and appears to be quite durable. The only real quality issue I see is that the locking mechanism is mostly plastic and it seems like it will fail first over time. There are a few unfinished sections and I'm concerned that the metal parts will oxidize or rust over time, but these are minor issues. Installation took ten minutes. The instruction manual is rather sparse, but the installation is really quite simple. The complexity of the installation depends in large part on how wide the opening you need to fit the gate. I have a 32" door opening and found that this is about the limit of what the included screws can do without the use of extensions. Yes, if you have a wider opening, extensions are included, but using them (or knowing if you need them) makes for an ugly installation with the effect of a small gate dangling in a large opening. However, once installed it feels solid (solid enough that our dog won't push it.) Once installed, operation is simple: just lift the handle and open the gate. However, it does require a free hand, and if you're installing it in a high-traffic area, you might want to check out one of the other Kidco products that can be foot operated. This is a good product for the price and if you need to place a gate between strong walls this is a good choice.
